Appeal to Heaven Flag, Justice Alito and Flag Code
Justice Samuel Alito faced calls for recusal after the "Appeal to Heaven" (pine tree) flag was seen flying at his vacation home. Alito clarified in a letter to Congress that his wife, Martha Ann, flew the flag and that he was unaware of its modern political associations. The flag, which dates back to the American Revolution and the writings of John Locke, has recently been characterized by critics as a symbol of Christian nationalism.
