A major food safety scandal involving eggs contaminated with the insecticide fipronil has affected 40 countries. Millions of eggs were pulled from shelves and destroyed after the chemical was traced to a Dutch cleaning product supplier. EU agriculture ministers met in Estonia to discuss the breach in the food chain's integrity and the failure of rapid alert systems to catch the contamination earlier.
