Elementary schools in Alabama have begun installing $60,000 rapid-deploy safe rooms inside classrooms. These ballistic-walled units can be deployed in under 10 seconds to protect students during active shooter events or severe weather. The implementation is criticized as a form of "preconditioning" children to live in a state of constant fear, rather than addressing the root causes of school violence.
