Shari Tem of San Antonio required surgery after a routine COVID-19 nasal swab ruptured her dural membrane, causing a spinal fluid leak and pneumocephalus. The rare injury has led to calls for more careful administration of tests or the use of oral swabs instead of deep nasal penetration.
