Amy Goodman of Democracy Now reported that the strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, head of the Kata'ib Hezbollah militia. Soleimani had reportedly flown to Baghdad from Syria to coordinate the suppression of anti-Iran protests that had been sweeping Iraq. Protests against U.S. military presence were subsequently organized in 30 American cities.
