The world's longest rail tunnel, the 57-kilometer Gotthard Base Tunnel, has officially opened in Switzerland after 17 years of construction. While celebrated as a feat of European unity, the project was funded entirely by Swiss taxpayers. German Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted that Germany is behind schedule on the connecting infrastructure needed to fully utilize the route.
